Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD)

Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD)

What is Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD)?

Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD) is a neurological condition that affects the way an individual processes sensory information from their environment. This can lead to difficulties in interpreting and responding to sensory stimuli, such as touch, sound, taste, and movement.

Although SPD is not currently recognized as a standalone diagnosis in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5), it is often associated with other conditions such as Autism Spectrum Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, and anxiety disorders.

SPD Symptoms and Signs

Individuals with Sensory Processing Disorder may experience a wide range of symptoms, which can be categorized into three primary patterns:

  1. Sensory Over-Responsivity: Individuals with this pattern may be overly sensitive to sensory stimuli and may experience discomfort, pain, or distress from sensations that others find tolerable or even enjoyable
  2. Sensory Under-Responsivity: In this pattern, individuals may not respond to sensory stimuli as quickly or as intensely as others, leading to difficulties in engaging with their environment and participating in everyday activities
  3. Sensory Craving: Individuals with this pattern may seek out intense sensory experiences, often engaging in repetitive behaviors or seeking out specific sensations

Common signs of SPD

  • Difficulty tolerating certain textures, tastes, or sounds
  • Overwhelmed or distressed in noisy or crowded environments
  • Difficulty with balance and coordination
  • Difficulty engaging in social activities
  • Difficulty with transitions or changes in routine

SPD Causes and Contributing Factors

The exact cause of Sensory Processing Disorder is not yet fully understood. However, research suggests that it may be related to genetic factors, prenatal and birth complications, and environmental factors. Additionally, SPD is often seen in individuals with other developmental or neurological conditions, suggesting that there may be overlapping factors contributing to the development of SPD.

SPD Treatment Options and Strategies

Treatment for Sensory Processing Disorder may include:

  • Sensory integration therapy: This approach involves providing carefully structured sensory experiences to help the individual develop more adaptive responses to sensory stimuli
  • Environmental modifications: Adjusting the individual's environment to reduce sensory triggers and promote a more comfortable and supportive space
  • Skill development: Teaching specific skills and strategies to help the individual cope with sensory challenges and participate more fully in daily activities

Tips for Managing Sensory Processing Disorder

In addition to professional intervention, there are several strategies that individuals with SPD and their families can use to manage sensory challenges:

  • Create a sensory-friendly environment: Reduce sensory triggers in the home by using soft lighting, minimising background noise, and providing comfortable seating and clothing options.
  • Establish routines: Consistent routines can help individuals with SPD feel more secure and better able to cope with sensory challenges.
  • Practice self-regulation techniques such deep breathing exercises, progress muscle relaxation etc.
